Was in fashion until racial tensions in the U.S. caused black barbers to fall out of favor with white men.
To be clean shaven was a common style in Europe and the US throughout history. In ancient Rome, beards were seen as a more "barbaric" style. In the 1700's, many royalty did their best to try to keep their faces clean shaven. Even peasantry found it good to be clean shaven as it helped keep away lice.
